The family of late reggae legend Ras Kimono has raised the alarm over what it describes as a brazen attempt to sell off part of his property in Ota, Ogun State, without authorisation.
In a strongly worded statement, the Estate declared the transaction null and void, warning members of the public to steer clear. NaijaChoice News obtained the release signed by the musician’s daughter, Ogechukwu N Onwubuya Kimono.
The Estate accused one Sybil Amuta, also known as Sybil Onwubuya Ekure, of falsely posing as the lawful wife of the deceased and selling one plot of the family land. The deal was reportedly sealed on March 17, 2026, with the buyer parting with ₦15 million paid into an account in her name.
Ras Kimono, whose real name was Oseloke Augustine Onwubuya, was a pioneer of Nigerian reggae music. His 1989 debut album Under Pressure, led by the street anthem “Rum-Bar Stylée”, captured the struggles of ordinary Nigerians and earned him a cult following across the country. The dreadlocked artiste from Delta State passed away in Lagos in June 2018 after slumping at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The Estate made it clear that Sybil Amuta has no legal right to the property. Her marriage to Ras Kimono was dissolved in August 2005. At the time of his death, the musician was legally married to Ms Cynthia Dumas, a union that began in 2007.
“Sybil Amuta (aka Sybil Onwubuya Ekure) is the former spouse of the deceased… The said individual has no legal authority or mandate to act on behalf of the Estate or to dispose of any of its assets,” the statement read.
The family expressed deep concern over the timing of the claim. They recalled how funds were raised in the United States for Sybil and her children to attend the burial, only for her to allegedly pocket the money and stay away. Neither she nor her children, the Estate claimed, have visited the late musician’s burial site.
The statement further warned that indications suggest the same individual may attempt to offload the remaining plot. Prospective buyers, estate agents and the general public have been advised to avoid any dealings with her concerning the Ogun property.
“Any person or entity engaging in such dealings does so at their own risk and may be subject to legal proceedings, including recovery actions and claims for damages,” the Estate cautioned.
The family said it remains committed to protecting the late icon’s legacy. Plans are underway to preserve and develop the Ota land in honour of Ras Kimono’s memory and contributions to Nigerian music.
Ogechukwu N Onwubuya Kimono, who herself sings and keeps her father’s reggae flame alive, appended her signature to the notice on behalf of the Estate.
The development comes amid growing concerns over land fraud in Ogun State, a hotspot for property scams due to its proximity to Lagos. Legal experts say such cases underscore the need for proper documentation and vigilance when dealing with estates of public figures.
The Estate has vowed to pursue all legal avenues to reclaim the sold plot and prevent further unauthorised transactions.
