United States President Donald Trump has directed the US Navy to begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz with immediate effect.
In a strongly worded post on Truth Social Sunday evening, Trump accused Iran of “world extortion” after peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, collapsed without agreement on Tehran’s nuclear programme. He said most other issues were resolved, but the nuclear question was not.
“Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote. He added that American forces will interdict vessels in international waters that paid tolls to Iran and will destroy mines allegedly laid by Iranian forces.
Trump warned that any Iranian attack on US ships or peaceful vessels would be met with overwhelming force. The move follows nearly 21 hours of negotiations involving US Vice President JD Vance that ended without a deal.
NaijaChoice News reports that the announcement has triggered fresh concerns in global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil trade, making it a vital artery for crude from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the UAE and other Gulf producers.
For Nigeria, the development carries direct economic implications. As a major crude exporter, the country stands to benefit from any upward pressure on international oil prices. However, prolonged disruption could also fuel global inflation and raise the cost of imported refined products, putting fresh strain on the naira and domestic fuel prices.
Energy analysts in Lagos say the Federal Government is already tracking the situation. Nigeria’s oil revenue, which accounts for the bulk of foreign exchange earnings, remains highly sensitive to events in the Gulf.
The US has described the Iranian toll system and mining activities as illegal and has vowed to restore unrestricted passage through the strait. No official reaction has yet come from Tehran or Abuja, but shipping sources say several vessels are already altering routes in anticipation of heightened naval activity.
