Bandar Abbas, Iran – Israel has announced the elimination of Commodore Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, in a targeted overnight strike on the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the operation as “precise and lethal,” saying it also took out other senior naval commanders. Tangsiri was directly responsible for Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Katz added.
NaijaChoice News reports that the strike occurred as tensions continue to escalate in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. The port city sits right beside the narrow waterway through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes daily.
Tangsiri had led the IRGC Navy since August 2018. In recent weeks, he adopted a more aggressive posture in the Gulf, repeatedly threatening US interests in the region. Last week, he warned civilians and workers to stay away from American-linked oil facilities.
“Our list of targets is updated. Oil facilities associated with America are now on par with American bases and will come under fire with full force,” Tangsiri declared at the time.
The United States has long identified the dismantling of Iran’s naval capabilities as a priority. Since the war began, American forces are believed to have destroyed around 100 vessels belonging to both the Iranian Navy and the IRGC.
The killing of Tangsiri comes at a time when the Hormuz blockade has already disrupted global energy supplies. Oil prices have surged, pushing petrol costs in Nigeria to as high as ₦1,400 per litre in some parts of the country.
For Nigeria, the world’s sixth-largest oil exporter, developments in the Gulf carry serious economic implications. Higher crude prices may boost government revenue in the short term, but the resulting spike in domestic fuel costs has already hit transporters, businesses and ordinary households hard.
Analysts say the removal of a key figure behind the blockade could help ease pressure on international shipping routes. However, the full impact on oil markets and regional stability remains unclear as Iran is yet to issue an official confirmation of Tangsiri’s death.
