Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye has declared he will not be intimidated by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over a heated exchange that has dominated national discourse.
The journalist stood firm on Sunday after Wike, during a media parley in Abuja, said he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” Okinbaloye. The minister was reacting to Okinbaloye’s comments on Politics Today about the dangers of Nigeria sliding into a one-party state.
Wike’s remark, made on Friday, has triggered widespread condemnation. Amnesty International described it as “reckless and violent language” that incites fear and undermines press freedom. Several civil society groups and media stakeholders have demanded an apology, warning that such outbursts from public officials threaten democratic values.
2. “You Must Go”, MURIC Declares Amupitan Persona Non Grata
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has again demanded the sack of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan.
MURIC’s grouse with INEC chairman is the 80-page legal brief authored by the professor which was one of the major documents used by the United States of America to indict Nigeria on the highly controversial and volatile issue of Christian genocide.
In a statement on Sunday, MURIC said: ”We are highly disappointed with both the Federal Government (FG) and Professor Joash Amupitan for their graveyard silence over the demand of the Nigerian Muslim Community that the INEC boss should be removed for penning the toxic 80-page legal brief which was one of the major documents used by the United States of America to indict Nigeria on the highly controversial and volatile issue of Christian genocide.
3. Power Crisis: Gencos Kick As Tinubu Approves ₦3.3 Trillion To Clear Legacy Debt
After criticism by presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, President Bola Tinubu has announced a plan to offset N3.3 trillion power sector legacy debt owed to generation companies.
A statement released on Sunday by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, said the N3.3 trillion approved payment plan followed due verification of the country’s power sector legacy debt, which has lasted for more than a decade.
The approved payment plan is in addition to the existing pioneer N501 billion bond to settle legacy debt, which generation companies said has risen to N6 trillion.
4. Prophetess Esther Distributes Tinubu-Branded Easter Packages to Church Members
Prophetess Esther Ajayi has distributed Easter food packages branded with the image and name of President Bola Tinubu to members of her church, sparking conversations across social media.
The distribution, which took place during Easter celebrations, saw congregants receive various food items packaged in bags bearing the president’s insignia. The gesture was reportedly aimed at supporting members during the festive period, a time when many Christian faithful commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
5. David Mark has not resigned as ADC National Chairman – Media Office
The African Democratic Congress has sharply rejected claims that Senator David Mark has stepped down as National Chairman, describing the reports as deliberate falsehoods meant to sow confusion.
In a strongly worded statement from the Media Office of the National Chairman, the party labelled the rumours an “insidious fabrication” pushed by “puerile, weak and inconsiderate propagandists.” NaijaChoice News obtained the statement late on Sunday evening.
6. Easter Attacks: Bandits Kill 16 In Benue, Katsina, Kaduna
Violence shattered Easter peace across northern Nigeria, claiming at least 16 lives and displacing dozens in Borno, Katsina, Benue and Kaduna states over the weekend.
Suspected armed herders hit Benue hardest. They stormed Mbalom, Mbatsada and Agana communities in Gwer East Local Government Area late Saturday, a busy market day in Mbalom. At least 10 people died and several others sustained injuries as residents fled to safer grounds. Gwer West LGA Chairman Timothy Adi told journalists that two bodies were recovered Saturday night, with seven more found Sunday, bringing the toll to nine in his initial confirmation. He described the assault as unprovoked and urged the Federal Government to step up action against armed herders. Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings as “a barbaric act and a direct affront to the collective peace and security of the state.”
7. NDLEA Arrests Pastor & Wife, Several Others For Drug Trafficking
The couple, identified as Afolabi Hodonu, 45, and Success Hodonu, 35, who oversee a church at Agonvi Sea Beach in Sakpo, Seme Border, Badagry, were picked up on Thursday, April 2, at the Gbaji checkpoint.
A thorough search of their Honda Pilot SUV uncovered 11 kilogrammes of skunk hidden in secret compartments of the vehicle.
The arrest followed the earlier detention of a fake security agent, Sunday Samuel, 35, at the same checkpoint on March 30. Samuel was moving 24.5 kilogrammes of skunk from Seme to Lagos.
