Oyo State Government has rolled out an extensive 10-day lineup of events to celebrate its 50th anniversary, kicking off today with a grand opening ceremony at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan. The state, carved out on February 3, 1976, marks this golden jubilee under the theme “Ajíṣe bí Ìbílẹ̀ láàrí,” emphasizing local heritage and progress.

Governor Seyi Makinde, in his announcement, described the celebrations as a blend of reflection and renewal, honoring pioneers while recommitting to a stronger future. “We will host cultural, social, civic, and commemorative events that reflect the richness and diversity of our people,” Makinde stated, highlighting investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and more over the past years.

The festivities begin today, January 26, at 10:00 a.m. with the opening ceremony, setting the stage for a series of community-focused activities. Tomorrow, January 27, features free health outreaches in all 33 local government areas, prioritizing seniors aged 50 and above, alongside film screenings by ace director Kunle Afolayan in key zones like Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbomosho, Iseyin, Eruwa, and Saki.

Wednesday, January 28, brings a vibrant carnival parade from Mapo Hall to Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, culminating in a star-studded musical concert at the venue. A thought-provoking lecture and symposium follow on Thursday, January 29, at the International Conference Centre, where leaders will discuss the state’s achievements and roadmap ahead.

State officials emphasized that these events aim to showcase Oyo’s cultural diversity, developmental strides, and unity, while inviting residents, indigenes, and diaspora to participate via a digital tribute wall for messages and memories. Social media buzz, including posts from locals and fans celebrating early vibes like football matches tied to the jubilee, underscores the excitement building across the Pace Setter State.

Makinde urged collective reflection on legacy and leadership, noting the milestone as a catalyst for sustained progress. As Oyo joins neighbors like Ogun State in marking similar anniversaries this year, the government calls for prayers and support to propel the state forward.
