Lagos Receives 24 Car-Trains From China To Boost Red Line

Lagos State has taken delivery of 24 new train cars from China to strengthen the fleet on the Red Line rail corridor.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the development on Thursday, describing the addition as a major boost for daily commuters battling heavy traffic across the city. The new cars, which arrived after successful factory tests, will increase passenger capacity and cut down waiting times at stations.

NaijaChoice News gathered that the 24 cars consist of three eight-coach train sets expected to ease pressure during peak hours on the Agbado to Oyingbo route. The Red Line, which began full commercial operations in late 2024, currently runs limited trips because it shares tracks with Nigerian Railway Corporation services.

Commuters have often complained about long waits and overcrowding, especially in the mornings and evenings. Transport officials believe the fresh rolling stock will allow more frequent services and make journeys smoother for thousands of Lagosians who depend on the rail to beat road congestion.

The acquisition forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to expand the Lagos Rail Mass Transit system. China has played a key role in the project, from construction of the corridor to supply of equipment, reflecting stronger bilateral ties in infrastructure development.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that the state remains committed to delivering an efficient and reliable transport network. “We remain focused on building a transport system that is efficient and reliable for everyone,” he stated.

Residents along the corridor, including those in Agege, Ikeja, and Mushin, are expected to feel the impact once the new cars enter service. The development comes as Lagos continues to push for modern mass transit options to support its growing population and economy.

Officials say integration of the additional fleet will help reduce reliance on buses and private vehicles, cutting down on road traffic and travel time. Further details on exact deployment timeline are expected from LAMATA in the coming weeks.

This latest delivery adds to previous procurements, including refurbished units from the UK and Talgo trains, showing steady progress in the state’s rail ambitions.
