KANO, Nigeria — The Federal Government has flagged off a N3.8 billion 2-megawatt solar hybrid power project at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Kano State.
The initiative, executed through the Energy Commission of Nigeria under the Renewed Hope Solarisation Programme, also includes the installation of 200 solar-powered streetlights across the campus.
Energy Commission of Nigeria Director-General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi led the ceremony alongside Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Tochukwu-Udeh, SAN.
The contract was awarded to Safiatu Global Resources Limited with a strict three-month completion timeline and no allowance for cost variation, Dr. Abdullahi stated.
According to energy audits, the university currently grapples with a monthly electricity bill of N22.4 million amid an energy demand ranging between 12.3MW and 16.4MW. Its connected load stands at only 8.26MW, with diesel backup capacity at a mere 2.07 MVA.
Dr. Abdullahi described the situation as unacceptable and said the project marks the beginning of efforts to address the power challenges facing the institution, which serves 24,339 students and staff and provides 5,200 hostel bed spaces.
While technical recommendations point to a 7MW solar mini-grid for full coverage, the 2MW Phase 1 project serves as a foundation for future expansion, he explained.
The system will feature a Battery Energy Storage System installed in decentralised clusters to ensure reliable power supply.
This groundbreaking in Wudil follows similar solar interventions at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and Bayero University Kano. The national programme targets hospitals and tertiary institutions across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Minister Tochukwu-Udeh emphasised that the project represents a strategic national policy aimed at fostering innovations to tackle Nigeria’s developmental challenges, rather than mere philanthropy.
ADUSTECH Vice-Chancellor Prof. Musa Tukur-Yakasai hailed the development as a bold step towards sustainable energy, innovation, and academic excellence in the Kano region.
As reported by NaijaChoice News, the initiative underscores growing federal commitment to renewable energy solutions in Nigeria’s higher education sector, promising reduced operational costs and improved learning conditions for thousands of students.
