ABUJA, NIGERIA — Stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have called on the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress and the Presidency to publicly address claims of interference in a Supreme Court case over the party’s leadership crisis.
The demand was made on Sunday in Abuja by the Grassroots for Mobilisation Network, the platform coordinating the ADC stakeholders. Spokesperson Mr Peter Emeka issued the call in a press statement obtained by NaijaChoice News.
Emeka said the APC and the Presidency owe Nigerians clear explanations on the alleged leakage of the Supreme Court’s decision and the reported pressure on justices to rule against the ADC in the ongoing tussle.
He stressed that the whole world is watching how opposition parties are being treated in the country, describing the situation as disturbing shenanigans that cannot be ignored.
The GMN spokesperson argued that the silence from the ruling party and the Presidency so far amounts to an admission of the allegations, urging them not to sweep the matter under the carpet.
Emeka also cited growing public anger over reports that the Presidency instructed a member of the House of Representatives to remain in his party and destabilise it, calling the action an abuse of office and a direct threat to democracy.
“If the APC and the Presidency do not come forward and address the allegations of interference, then the country is doomed,” he said.
Online platforms had reported on Saturday that the Presidency was pressing Supreme Court justices to deliver a verdict favouring Nafiu Bala, one of the claimants in the ADC leadership dispute.
Emeka warned that any such interference would lead to the collapse of the judiciary. He appealed to the international community to intervene, describing the alleged moves as an abuse of power and a total disregard for the rule of law.
Legal experts have repeatedly cautioned that the judiciary must avoid political party disputes under the Electoral Act. Emeka reinforced this position, noting that the Supreme Court has consistently ruled internal party crises as non-justiciable internal affairs.
The fresh demand highlights mounting concerns over the sanctity of the judiciary and the health of Nigeria’s democracy.
