BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has taken steps to contest the Edo South Senatorial District seat in the 2027 elections on the platform of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC).
NaijaChoice News gathered that the move marks a significant shift for the two-term governor, who recently handed over power to Governor Monday Okpebholo after the 2024 polls. Sources close to the former governor say he is leveraging his influence in Edo South to secure the ADC ticket.
Obaseki, who governed Edo from 2016 to 2024, first under the APC before switching to the PDP, built a record of infrastructure projects, including road networks, the Benin Science and Technology Park, and health sector reforms that many residents in the district still reference.
Political observers note that his entry could reshape the Edo South race. The district, which includes Benin City and surrounding areas, has seen intense interest from aspirants across parties, with the incumbent senator facing calls for stronger performance.
ADC in Edo State has witnessed internal crises over leadership, but loyalists believe Obaseki’s stature could unify factions and boost the party’s chances.
A party insider told NaijaChoice News that Obaseki’s decision stems from his desire to continue contributing to Edo’s development at the national level. “He remains popular in Edo South for his developmental strides,” the source added.
However, analysts caution that the race will be competitive. Other parties, including the APC, are already positioning strong contenders from the district.
As preparations for party primaries heat up ahead of 2027, Obaseki’s move is expected to trigger realignments among Edo South politicians and stakeholders.
