ABUJA, Nigeria — Lawmakers elected on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have issued a stern ultimatum to the Federal Government regarding the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The caucus is demanding the immediate removal of the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, citing grave concerns over the commission’s readiness and neutrality.
Leading the call, Hon. Mukhtar Zakari, the member representing Tarauni Federal Constituency of Kano State, stated that the continuous stay of Amupitan in office poses a significant threat to national stability.
Speaking with NaijaChoice News in Abuja, Zakari expressed fears that the current trajectory of the electoral umpire could lead Nigeria into a deep constitutional crisis.
He warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that failure to act swiftly could result in a disputed election where the country might end up having two individuals claiming the presidency.
“We are at a crossroads where the transparency of our elections is non-negotiable,” Zakari told NaijaChoice News. “The leadership of INEC must be above suspicion to avoid a parallel government situation that could tear this nation apart.”
The lawmaker emphasized that the ADC and other concerned stakeholders would not sit idly by while the nation’s democratic foundations are allegedly undermined by administrative lapses.
This development comes amid rising tensions and calls from various opposition quarters for a total overhaul of the electoral commission to restore public confidence.
As at the time of this report, the Presidency has not issued an official response to the specific demands made by the ADC lawmakers.
Nigerians continue to watch the unfolding political drama closely, with many civil society groups joining the call for reforms that ensure the sanctity of the ballot box.
