BAUCHI, Nigeria — Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Maitama Tuggar has declared his intention to contest the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 general elections.
Tuggar, who represented Gamawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, announced his decision after stepping down from his federal appointment in line with regulations guiding political office holders seeking elective positions.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve as minister, noting that the experience deepened his understanding of governance and better positioned him to address the needs of Bauchi residents.
“Our state stands at a crossroads. Despite our abundant resources, many people remain poor and lack access to quality education and healthcare. This must change,” Tuggar said during the announcement.
The aspirant emphasised that his background in business and farming has given him first-hand insight into the daily challenges faced by entrepreneurs, farmers, and herders across Bauchi State.
Tuggar, who previously ran for governor but lost, said the experience taught him valuable lessons in resilience and the practical realities of electoral contests in Nigeria.
He pledged to prioritise timely payment of workers’ salaries, describing it as fundamental to restoring public trust and boosting morale in the civil service.
On his vision for the state, Tuggar promised to focus on agriculture, rural development, and economic growth by investing in farming, livestock production, agro-processing, rural roads, and storage facilities.
“We will support farmers with incentives and improve our weekly markets, which sustain millions of livelihoods across the state,” he stated.
The former minister also outlined plans to tackle rising insecurity through community policing, sustained dialogue, and closer collaboration with traditional rulers.
“No farmer should fear going to the farm, no business person should fear travelling on our roads, and no child should be afraid to go to school,” Tuggar declared.
NaijaChoice News understands that Tuggar aims to build on existing achievements while correcting past gaps to create a more prosperous Bauchi.
His entry adds a significant dimension to the unfolding political landscape in Bauchi State ahead of 2027, as residents seek leaders capable of translating the state’s rich resources into tangible development for all.
