BAUCHI, NIGERIA – Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has awarded a N5 million scholarship to students of Intashara Islamic School in Bauchi.
The gesture came during his visit to the school located in the Yelwa area of Bauchi metropolis on Thursday. Obi handed over the cash directly to support the pupils’ education, stressing the need to blend Qur’anic studies with formal learning so no child is left behind.
NaijaChoice News gathered that the donation forms part of Obi’s broader push to invest in education across northern Nigeria. He had earlier donated N10 million to Malikiya College of Nursing Sciences in the same state, bringing his total support for Bauchi schools to N15 million in one day.
A female student who spoke on behalf of Intashara Islamic School moved many in attendance when she narrated the challenges facing pupils, including issues linked to insecurity in parts of the region. Her emotional delivery reportedly brought tears to some eyes.
Moved by her story, Obi immediately pledged to personally cover all her medical expenses. He assured the school management of his continued support for initiatives that combine Islamic education with basic formal studies.
Obi has consistently advocated for quality basic education, especially for almajiri children and those in Qur’anic schools. He believes such investments will produce better citizens equipped with both moral values and practical knowledge.
The visit followed his meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed at the Government House. Stakeholders described the donations as timely, given the rising cost of education and healthcare in many northern communities.
Parents and teachers at Intashara Islamic School welcomed the scholarship, saying it will ease the burden on families and motivate the children to study harder. Obi’s team is expected to work out the details of how the N5 million will be disbursed among deserving students.
This latest intervention adds to Obi’s record of private support for schools and health institutions across different parts of the country. Many residents in Bauchi see it as encouragement for other well-meaning Nigerians to invest in human capital development.
