The United States is deploying more than 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East before the end of April in a clear bid to intensify pressure on Iran.
NaijaChoice News reports that the fresh troops include about 6,000 personnel aboard the USS George HW Bush carrier strike group, which is currently sailing around Africa to join operations in the region. Another 4,200 troops from the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and its 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are expected to arrive by month-end.
This move comes barely weeks after Washington confirmed that roughly 50,000 American troops had already been committed to the conflict since it began on February 28.
The deployment will push the number of US aircraft carriers in the Middle East to three once the George HW Bush arrives. The USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald Ford are already in position and have taken part in direct strikes against Iranian targets.
The Washington Post first broke the story on Tuesday, citing unnamed current and former US officials. NaijaChoice News notes that the details remain largely unverified at this stage.
On Wednesday, American forces stepped up a naval blockade around Iran, which officials say has now cut off key maritime trade routes to the country.
In Nigeria, the development is being followed with keen interest because of its possible effect on global crude oil prices. As Africa’s largest oil producer, any spike in international oil costs could boost government revenue but also trigger higher fuel prices at home and renewed inflation pressures.
Security experts in Lagos say prolonged fighting in the Gulf could also disrupt shipping lanes, indirectly affecting Nigeria’s import bills for refined petroleum products.
