ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria has struck a major defence deal with Türkiye to build a dedicated military training facility aimed at sharpening the armed forces’ capacity against rising insecurity.
The pact emerged from high-level bilateral talks between Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.) and his Turkish counterpart during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2026.
NaijaChoice News reports that the Ministry of Defence confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday by its Chief Information Officer, Queeneth Iheoma-Hart.
The planned centre will function as a long-term hub for specialised training, with Nigeria identifying a suitable coastal site for the permanent structure. A temporary location will be provided immediately to kick-start operations.
Nigerian personnel will undergo training in Special Forces operations, counter-terrorism, intelligence integration, counter-drone and counter-IED tactics, as well as United Nations pre-deployment exercises. An initial group will head to Türkiye shortly, accompanied by Turkish language instruction and joint field drills.
The agreement also opens doors for technology transfer, defence industry collaboration, surveillance systems, unmanned aerial platforms and enhanced maritime security support.
Gen. Musa described the outcome as a concrete step forward in Nigeria-Türkiye relations. He said it aligns directly with the Renewed Hope Agenda and will deliver measurable improvements in national security.
The partnership comes as United States forces continue to provide training, intelligence and equipment assistance to Nigerian troops.
Retired Colonel Ahmed Usman, Special Adviser on Security to the Sokoto State Governor, welcomed the initiative but warned that success hinges on troop welfare. He stressed that better pay, insurance, psychological support and living conditions remain critical if advanced training is to translate into lasting gains against insurgency and banditry.
