Trump Imposes Tariffs on NATO Allies in Escalating Push to Acquire Greenland

President Donald J. Trump has announced the imposition of escalating tariffs on several key NATO allies, including Denmark, in a dramatic bid to pressure Denmark into selling Greenland to the United States.

In a lengthy post on Truth Social dated January 17, 2026, President Trump accused Denmark and other European nations of undermining global security by opposing U.S. acquisition of the Arctic island. He claimed that China and Russia have interests in Greenland and that only American control could safeguard it effectively.

Trump stated that the United States has long subsidized Denmark and European Union countries through favorable trade terms and military protection. He referenced historical U.S. attempts to purchase Greenland dating back over 150 years, emphasizing its strategic importance for modern defense systems, including what he called the “Golden Dome” missile defense initiative.

The president specifically criticized recent deployments of military personnel from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland to Greenland, describing their presence as “for purposes unknown” and a “very dangerous situation” threatening planetary security.

To address this, Trump declared:

  • Starting February 1, 2026, a 10% tariff will apply to all goods exported from these eight countries to the United States.
  • The rate will increase to 25% on June 1, 2026.
  • These tariffs will remain in effect “until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”

Trump expressed openness to negotiations, stating the U.S. is ready to discuss terms with Denmark or the involved nations.

The announcement has sparked immediate backlash from European leaders and strained transatlantic relations. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen affirmed the EU’s “full solidarity” with Denmark and Greenland, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the tariffs “completely wrong” and pledged direct talks with the U.S. administration. French President Emmanuel Macron rejected any intimidation, vowing a united European response.

Protests erupted in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, and across Denmark, with thousands rallying under slogans supporting self-determination and rejecting U.S. claims. Danish officials have reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and that its future rests with its people and Denmark.

Bipartisan U.S. lawmakers, including members of the Senate NATO Observer Group, have criticized the move as harmful to American interests and beneficial to adversaries like Russia and China. Some Republican senators expressed concern that the tariffs divide NATO at a critical time.

Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, holds significant strategic value due to its Arctic location, natural resources, and existing U.S. military facilities under a 1951 defense agreement.

This latest escalation revives Trump’s longstanding interest in acquiring Greenland, previously floated during his first term, but now backed by concrete trade threats amid heightened Arctic tensions. The coming weeks are expected to see intense diplomatic efforts to avert further deterioration in U.S.-European alliances.
