President Donald J. Trump has claimed that United States forces destroyed and sank nine Iranian naval ships, describing some as relatively large and strategically important, while vowing to target the remaining vessels in ongoing operations against Iran.

The announcement came via a post on Truth Social on Sunday, March 1, 2026, where Trump wrote: “I have just been informed that we have destroyed and sunk 9 Iranian Naval Ships, some of them relatively large and important. We are going after the rest — They will soon be floating at the bottom of the sea, also! In a different attack, we largely destroyed their Naval Headquarters. Other than that, their Navy is doing very well! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

NaijaChoice News reports that a US defence official has confirmed the authenticity of Trump’s post, which forms part of intensified US-Israel combat operations against Iranian military targets that escalated dramatically over the weekend.

The strikes targeted Iranian naval assets in what appears to be a deliberate effort to cripple Tehran’s maritime capabilities in the Persian Gulf. Trump’s message, delivered in his characteristic bold style, signals that American forces are not slowing down but actively pursuing total dominance over Iran’s naval fleet.

This latest claim follows reports of heavy US and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian missile facilities, naval bases and other military installations beginning late February. Iran has responded with waves of missile and drone attacks on US and Israeli positions, leading to the first confirmed American casualties — three US service members killed and five others seriously wounded, according to US Central Command.

Military analysts say the destruction of nine vessels, including larger ones, and the near-total demolition of Iran’s naval headquarters represent a severe blow to Tehran’s ability to project power in the vital Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20 per cent of global oil passes daily.

NaijaChoice News gathered that the development has already sent ripples across global energy markets. Brent crude prices jumped in early trading amid fears of possible disruption to oil shipments if the conflict worsens or if Iran attempts to block the strait in retaliation.

For Nigeria, the implications are two-sided. As Africa’s largest oil producer and a key OPEC member, higher global crude prices could translate into increased export earnings, stronger foreign reserves, and bigger allocations to the Federation Account — a welcome relief for federal and state governments already battling revenue shortfalls.

Economic experts quoted in local reports, including those from Nairametrics and Premium Times, however, warn that prolonged instability could also push domestic fuel prices higher, worsen inflation (already hovering near 30 per cent), and put fresh pressure on the naira if global economic uncertainty triggers capital flight.

The Nigerian government is yet to issue an official statement on the latest escalation, but diplomatic sources in Abuja indicate Abuja is closely monitoring the situation, given Nigeria’s large Muslim population and strong economic ties with both the West and the Middle East.

Trump’s post has drawn mixed reactions worldwide, with supporters hailing it as proof of American strength while critics question the timing and potential for wider regional war.

NaijaChoice News will keep following this fast-moving story, including any responses from Iranian leaders, updates on the battlefield, and the direct impact on Nigeria’s economy and foreign policy. Developments are expected to unfold rapidly in the coming hours.
