The Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle has received a complete overhaul, turning decades-old structures into a state-of-the-art facility that now stands as one of the largest school communities in Africa. NaijaChoice News reports that the complex, which sits on nearly 12 hectares and serves over 20,000 students across 36 schools, marks the most significant upgrade since its establishment more than 40 years ago.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inspected the newly rebuilt site recently as preparations for full commissioning intensify. Before the intervention, many classroom blocks were dilapidated and overcrowded. Today, fresh structures have replaced them, easing pressure on learning spaces in this densely populated part of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area.
New facilities now dot the complex. Students have access to a standard football pitch, basketball and other sports courts, a health centre, and even a fire station. Solar power and improved water systems ensure reliable utilities, while inner roads and drainages have been upgraded for better movement across the 11.7-hectare site.
Inclusion remains a major priority in the redesign. Dedicated blocks for learners with disabilities now feature lifts and other accessibility aids. A new vocational centre offers hands-on training in tailoring, plumbing, and masonry, giving students practical skills for the job market.

The push for technology and science is equally strong. An ICT hub and central laboratory now equip pupils for digital learning and experiments. This aligns directly with the first “E” in the Lagos State THEMES+ agenda – Education and Technology – which aims to prepare young Nigerians for a 21st-century economy.

Residents of Ajegunle have welcomed the development, describing it as a long-overdue boost for children in a community long associated with limited opportunities. With the complex now fully upgraded, thousands of primary and secondary pupils stand to benefit from safer, smarter, and more inclusive learning environments.
The transformation underscores the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to fixing public education infrastructure where it matters most. As commissioning draws closer, education stakeholders say the new Tolu Complex could serve as a model for similar projects across Lagos and beyond.
