ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, with a special take-off grant of N15 billion.
The approval fulfils key provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, allowing the institution to run as a multi-campus university across the country.
NaijaChoice News obtained the statement signed on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The N15 billion fund will come from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s 2026 allocation. It will support priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation and core training assets at the Erinja campus.
Onanuga said the choice of Erinja followed recommendations from a high-level meeting that included the Minister of Police Affairs, Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.
The meeting examined student intake capacity, funding availability, academic standards and the Nigerian Police Force’s current push to recruit and train more personnel.
The Presidency stated that President Tinubu believes the new campus will strengthen institutional governance, promote modern policing education and improve national security.
The Nigeria Police Academy has so far operated only from its single campus in Wudil, Kano State.
Section 3 of the Police Act gives the academy’s Governing Council power to establish additional campuses, subject to approval by the National Universities Commission.
In June 2025, the House of Representatives had called for full implementation of the 2021 Act by creating campuses in each of the six geopolitical zones.
The academy began in 1988 with temporary sites in Challawa, Kano and Kaduna. It moved to its permanent site in Wudil in 1996 and gained degree-awarding status as Nigeria’s 37th federal university in 2012.
It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in law enforcement, law, sciences, social and management sciences, and humanities. The Erinja campus becomes the first satellite facility under the 2021 Act.
