Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 general election will be his last attempt to contest for the presidency of Nigeria. The statement was made during a live interview on Arise News Television on Wednesday night.
“The 2027 election will be my last attempt at contesting for president,” Atiku said. NaijaChoice News monitored the interview where the veteran politician, who has now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), spoke openly about his political future.
Atiku, who ran unsuccessfully in 2019 and 2023 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), described the coming poll as one with higher stakes. The 79-year-old insisted he remains healthy and determined to give it one final shot.
He used the platform to criticise President Bola Tinubu’s administration, calling it a major disappointment and one of the worst the country has seen. Atiku warned that Nigerians must vote out the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or risk a bleak future.
On the ADC platform, Atiku revealed that the party will first explore a consensus arrangement before going into direct primaries. He pledged to step aside for any candidate who emerges through either process, including possible coalition partners.
The declaration has triggered mixed reactions across social media, with some doubting he will truly retire from presidential contests while others see it as a bold move to galvanise the opposition. Political watchers say the development could reshape the 2027 race and intensify realignment within the opposition bloc.
As the countdown to 2027 begins, Atiku’s announcement signals that the battle for Aso Rock is already heating up.
