OWERRI, NIGERIA — The political landscape of Imo State witnessed a significant shift on Saturday as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officially received a wave of high-profile defectors from various rival political parties.
The National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, led the reception of the new members, further solidifying the party’s presence in the South East. The event was attended by a high-powered delegation from the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), who traveled from Abuja to witness the realignment.
Among the prominent figures returning to the fold is High Chief Duru Mike Ejiogu, a founding member of the PDP and well-known business mogul. His return is viewed by analysts at NaijaChoice News as a strategic boost to the party’s local organizational structure.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) suffered a notable hit as former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere, officially dumped the party for the PDP. Other APC stalwarts who made the switch include High Chief Summers Nwokie, popularly known as Ikukuọma Mbaise, and former ENTRACO Chairman, Hon. Chief Sunny Chiadi.
The influx of new members extended beyond the APC, drawing from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the Labour Party (LP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Notable among them is Barr. Ikenna Emeruem and Hon. Chief Chris Onye, the President-General of the Igbo Community in Gboko, Benue State.
Speaking on the development, Senator Anyanwu noted that the move signals a “political realignment of massive proportions.” He emphasized that the defectors are transitioning alongside their existing political structures and thousands of loyal supporters across the state.
The PDP leadership stated that the presence of the NWC members underscores the importance of Imo State in the party’s national recovery and victory strategy. The party maintains that this surge of heavyweights is a testament to its growing grassroots appeal.
Observers noted that the move by these seasoned administrators and power brokers could alter the balance of power in the state ahead of future polls. The defectors cited the need for a unified front and expressed confidence in the leadership direction of the PDP.
As the political atmosphere in the South East heats up, this development marks one of the largest single-day defections in recent Imo history. The PDP continues to position itself as the primary opposition force ready to reclaim dominance in the Heartland State.
This mass movement of political actors highlights a deepening fracture within the ruling party’s ranks while providing the PDP with renewed momentum and strategic depth.
