IBADAN, Oyo State — Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, at the Governor’s Office in the state Secretariat, Ibadan.
The meeting came shortly after Governor Makinde hosted an opposition summit in the Oyo State capital, which attracted prominent political figures and stakeholders.
Sources close to the development indicate the discussion forms part of wider consultations within opposition ranks as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Details of the agenda for the Obi-Makinde meeting were not made public as of the time of this report. However, political observers view it as a strategic engagement aimed at strengthening ties across opposition platforms.
This latest move by the former Anambra State governor follows his recent closed-door discussion with former President Goodluck Jonathan, a development that also sparked significant public interest across the country.
Yunusa Tanko, Obi’s former campaign spokesman and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, explained that such consultations remain central to Obi’s political outreach.
“It is a visit to our national leaders… to appeal to them to give support to the candidature of Peter Obi based on available facts that the Nigerian youths have made up their mind,” Tanko said.
He added that the engagements seek to promote unity and bridge existing gaps in national leadership representation.
The development underscores the growing momentum in opposition circles, especially as major stakeholders intensify efforts to forge a common front ahead of future electoral battles.
In Oyo State, the meeting holds particular significance given Governor Makinde’s influence within the opposition space and his role in recent coalition talks.
NaijaChoice News reports that these high-level interactions reflect the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political landscape as politicians begin early positioning for 2027.
The consultations highlight the determination of key opposition figures to address national challenges through broader alliances and shared strategies.
As political activities gradually heat up, such engagements could play a crucial role in shaping the direction of opposition politics in the lead-up to the next general elections.
