The Pentagon is considering diverting weapons originally meant for Ukraine to the Middle East, where the ongoing war with Iran has heavily depleted some of America’s most critical munitions.
NaijaChoice News reports that the arms under review include air defence interceptor missiles bought through a NATO programme launched last year. Under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), partner countries purchase US-made equipment for Kyiv.
The move comes as United States operations in the region intensify. Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Central Command, said on Wednesday that American forces had struck over 10,000 targets inside Iran and were on track to curb Tehran’s ability to project power beyond its borders.
Cooper added that the US had destroyed 92 percent of Iran’s largest naval vessels, leaving them unable to sail and significantly limiting the country’s naval reach.
A Pentagon spokesperson told reporters the Defence Department would “ensure that US forces and those of our allies and partners have what they need to fight and win.” The Pentagon, the US State Department and NATO have yet to comment on the Washington Post report that first revealed the discussions.
For Nigeria, the development throws fresh light on the growing strain on US resources as it juggles multiple global flashpoints. As Africa’s largest oil producer, the country watches energy markets closely because any prolonged fighting in the Middle East tends to push up crude prices.
Higher oil revenues could ease pressure on the naira and federal budget, but they also risk feeding inflation and fuel costs at home. Nigerian foreign policy analysts say the shift highlights how great-power priorities can reshape aid flows and security partnerships far beyond the battle zones.
The situation remains fluid, with no final decision announced on the weapons redirection. Deliveries already paid for under the NATO programme are said to be continuing for now, but future batches may see changes in composition.
