In a move that has sparked widespread debate across social media and religious circles, renowned Lagos-based pastor and relationship coach, Kingsley Okonkwo, has staunchly defended his new Bible-inspired tattoo, describing it as an innovative tool for evangelism. The head of David Christian Centre (DCC) unveiled the ink – a Roman numeral representation of John 3:16 (“III: XVI”) – in a video shared on his official Instagram page to mark his 50th birthday celebrations.

The scripture, often hailed as the cornerstone of the Christian Gospel, reads: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Okonkwo, known for his modern approach to faith, marriage counselling, and youth engagement, explained that the tattoo was not just a personal milestone but a strategic way to preach the message of salvation.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, the pastor addressed the brewing controversy, stating: “My religious brothers and sisters were busy judging over tattoo; they didn’t notice that the gospel (John 3:16) was preached to millions in 24hrs by almost all blogs. Anyway, we will share in details on Monday night. For now, please come to my praise party/thanksgiving service this Sunday @dcclagos on mainland & island. There will be food, fun, and praise.” He further shaded critics in a video response, saying, “Some of you African people, you don’t have work. It’s tattoo you people are discussing. Don’t worry, I’ll educate you guys after my birthday party.”

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, the initial unveiling of the tattoo on Saturday drew mixed reactions online, with some netizens questioning its compatibility with biblical teachings. Leviticus 19:28, which states, “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord,” was frequently cited by detractors. One Instagram user, @iamqneth, commented: “The Bible says we should not make a mark on our skin. Well, I know that the Bible hasn’t changed, and God’s word hasn’t changed either, so all I can say is hmmmm!” Another, @sailorojay, added: “It baffles me. Does this pastor not know it’s a sin to tattoo his skin? As a pastor, you should be leading members in the right path with what the Bible teaches.”

Prominent voices joined the fray, including Ossai Ovie Success, a media aide to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who publicly condemned the act. In a statement, Ossai declared: “A Pastor Shouldn’t Have a Tattoo,” emphasizing that religious leaders must uphold scriptural standards without compromise. On X (formerly Twitter), user @UmeunegbuP analyzed the issue poetically, likening the body to “hardware” owned by God and questioning the integrity of altering it, even for faith-based reasons.

However, supporters rallied behind Okonkwo, praising the tattoo as a bold, creative expression of faith. Instagram user @nnekaekpe referenced Revelation 19:16, noting: “Tatted!!!!! ‘And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.’” Another, @sheunnatural, humorously remarked: “Now I can get my tattoo. My mentor gbe mi debe,” implying the pastor’s action gave them permission. On X, @Jhood_O defended the cleric, urging critics to focus on the action rather than attacking his character or decades-long ministry: “You can disagree with his choice, that’s fair… But turning that into attacks on his calling is pure hypocrisy.”

Okonkwo, who has built a reputation through his contemporary teachings on relationships and has a massive following among Nigerian youth, continued his birthday festivities undeterred. He shared additional photos captioning one: “Still celebrating the big Five 0,” while advising followers to “drink water and relax” ahead of his detailed explanation on Monday.

This incident highlights the ongoing tension between traditional religious interpretations and modern expressions of faith in Nigeria, where Christianity influences daily life profoundly. As the debate rages on, many await Okonkwo’s full address, which could reshape discussions on evangelism in the digital age.
