OpenAI Shuts Down Sora AI Video Platform

SAN FRANCISCO, United States — OpenAI has discontinued Sora, its AI video generation platform that captured global attention with its ability to turn text prompts into realistic short videos.

NaijaChoice News reports the surprise move came on Tuesday through a direct message from the Sora team to users, following internal talks on the company’s research direction.

The team described the decision as difficult but necessary, noting that Sora had evolved far beyond a simple tool into a space where creators built communities and audiences around AI-generated content.

“We know many of you invested significant time and energy into Sora – building not just gens, but also audiences and real communities,” the statement read. “The creativity that emerged exceeded what we could have expected.”

In a follow-up post on X, OpenAI confirmed the full shutdown of the app and its API while thanking users. “We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you,” the company wrote. “What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.”

OpenAI said it will soon release timelines for the closure and details on how users can export and preserve their work. The focus now, officials added, is ensuring a smooth transition for everyone affected.

Sora, which gained a standalone social app in September 2025, quickly drew interest from digital creators worldwide for its high-quality video output. Its short lifespan underscores the rapid changes in the AI industry, where even viral products can be sidelined as companies chase new priorities like robotics and enterprise tools.

In Nigeria, the platform had begun making inroads among young content creators, filmmakers, and social media influencers in Lagos and beyond. With the local creator economy booming on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, many saw Sora as an affordable way to produce professional-looking videos without heavy equipment or studio costs.

Industry watchers here say the shutdown could slow momentum for AI-assisted storytelling in Nollywood and the wider digital space, where creators already grapple with high data tariffs and limited access to advanced tools.

Some Nigerian filmmakers had started experimenting with Sora to prototype scenes or generate quick promotional clips, a trend that experts believe helped democratise video production in a country hungry for fresh content.

OpenAI has not announced an exact closure date but pledged further updates on data preservation and support options. For now, users are being urged to back up their creations while the platform remains accessible.

The development comes as OpenAI shifts resources toward bigger goals, leaving many creators to explore alternatives in an ever-evolving AI landscape.
