A heartbreaking incident has left a Nigerian family in deep mourning as Mrs. Oluranti Olufunmilayo Esther Akinyemi, a devoted mother of four, passed away in the United Kingdom just days before her son’s graduation ceremony. The tragedy unfolded less than 20 hours after her arrival, turning what was meant to be a joyous family milestone into an unimaginable loss.

Mrs. Akinyemi traveled from Nigeria to the UK on February 11, 2026, eagerly anticipating her son’s graduation scheduled for February 18. According to family accounts shared on social media and fundraising platforms, she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the early hours of February 12 and was immediately rushed to Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Despite being placed on life support, her condition deteriorated, and she was declared clinically dead on February 14 after three days in a coma.

The family, through a poignant appeal on JustGiving, described the event as “sudden and completely unexpected.” Adekunle Ogundana, who initiated the campaign, called for support to repatriate her remains to Nigeria, settle outstanding medical bills, and cover funeral expenses. The goal is to raise £20,000, with £2,087 collected from 97 donors as of Wednesday. “Help us bring our sister, mother, friend and beloved home,” the appeal read, highlighting the profound impact of her loss on loved ones.

Social media has been flooded with condolences and reflections on the incident, with many users drawing attention to the risks elderly Nigerians face during long-haul travels abroad. X user @agu_i advised travelers to prioritize health precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding excessive alcohol and caffeine, moving around during flights, and wearing compression socks to prevent circulation issues. “These will help keep blood circulation active and warm enough to welcome cold weather. This is not the first time we are losing our parents to the cold hands of death in a similar situation,” the post stated.

Others shared personal stories of similar tragedies. @The4thTobs recounted the case of a woman from Sangotedo market who collapsed and died upon arrival in the UK for omugwo (traditional postpartum care for her daughter). “They said she collapsed as soon as she got out of the plane when they landed, and they took her to the hospital, and she was confirmed dead,” the user noted. Meanwhile, @iamSwagga22 called for urgent reforms, urging Nigerian health authorities and the aviation industry to establish a Pulmonary Embolism Team and guidelines to address such emergencies. “If Nigeria were a serious, sensible country, we should have a Pulmonary Embolism Team that works diligently with the aviation industry to create a guideline,” the post emphasized.

This incident adds to a growing list of Nigerian deaths in the UK under distressing circumstances. Just weeks earlier, Saburi Olayinka Adeniji, a 22-year-old Nigerian non-league footballer playing for Kings Park Rangers in Essex, succumbed to a severe brain stem injury on February 6, 2026. Adeniji passed away in hospital a day before his wife and four-year-old daughter could arrive from Nigeria to bid farewell, despite a frantic fundraising effort to fly them over. Tributes from his club highlighted his fighting spirit, with a GoFundMe raising significant funds for his family’s support.

As the Akinyemi family grapples with this profound loss, the Nigerian diaspora community is reminded of the fragility of life and the need for better health awareness during international travel. NaijaChoice News extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and urges readers to contribute to the fundraising campaign if possible. May Mrs. Akinyemi’s soul rest in peace.
