Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, officially commissioned the newly constructed state secretariat of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan, the state capital, in a colourful ceremony attended by top party chieftains from across the country.
The state-of-the-art facility, located at Oke-Ado area of Ibadan, was personally donated by Governor Makinde as part of his commitment to strengthening the party’s structures in Oyo State and the Southwest region. The governor announced that the secretariat would be named after Alhaji Omokunmi Mustapha, the former Oyo State PDP Chairman, who played a pivotal role in leading the party to victory in the 2019 elections.

In his address at the event, Governor Makinde stated: “Earlier today, we held the official opening ceremony of the PDP State Secretariat in Ibadan. The secretariat will be named after Alhaji Omokunmi Mustapha, the Oyo State PDP Chairman who led PDP to victory in the State in 2019. I handed over the documents to the property to the National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki SAN for onward transmission to the Board of Trustees who hold property in trust for the PDP.”
The commissioning was performed by the PDP National Chairman, Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), who commended Makinde for his selfless contribution to the party. Turaki described the donation as a testament to the governor’s dedication to PDP’s growth and unity, noting that the new secretariat would serve as a hub for party operations, strategy sessions, and grassroots mobilisation ahead of future elections.
Prominent attendees included former Kano State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), Board of Trustees (BoT), Oyo State PDP executives, lawmakers, and other stakeholders. The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, hailed the event as a “significant milestone” in the party’s progress, emphasising that the facility symbolises commitment and sacrifice.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, plans for the secretariat’s commissioning had been in the works since early this year, with Governor Makinde’s donation underscoring his vision for a stronger PDP in the region. The event also provided a platform for party leaders to address internal challenges, including recent court rulings affecting the party’s national leadership.
Governor Makinde, in a veiled response to criticisms from some quarters, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, asserted that the PDP in Oyo State remains united and focused on delivering good governance. “We’ll not hold PDP for another party to be in power in 2027,” Makinde declared, questioning the moral standing of external interferers in the state’s party affairs. He highlighted the party’s achievements under his leadership, including inclusive policies that have fostered cohesion and growth.
Rep. Abass Adigun Agboworin, representing Ibadan North East/South East Federal Constituency, lauded Makinde’s “purposeful leadership,” stating that the new secretariat would enhance the party’s efficiency in serving the people. Similarly, Hon. Yusuf Adebisi, a state lawmaker, described the donation as a boost for PDP’s preparations towards the 2027 general elections.

The ceremony, which featured cultural displays and speeches from party faithful, comes amid ongoing efforts by the PDP to resolve internal disputes and position itself as a formidable opposition at the national level. With the new secretariat now operational, party members expressed optimism about consolidating gains in Oyo State, where PDP has maintained dominance since 2019.
