Violent scene erupted at Tansian University, Oba, in Anambra State, as a mob of angry students reportedly caught a lecturer — suspected to be a Catholic priest — allegedly having sexual intercourse with a female student inside a classroom on the university campus.
In a video shared on X seen by SaharaReporters on Tuesday, it shows a middle-aged man being confronted by a surging crowd of students.
In the video shared by @emmaikumeh, a social media user, the mob, seen in a state of high agitation, descended on the man, beating him and tearing his clothes until he was nearly naked.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Catholic-owned institution and the surrounding Oba community. While the exact timing of the encounter remains unclear, sources within the university suggested that the clergyman may have been the victim of a deliberate “sting operation” by the students.
According to student sources, there have been long-standing, private complaints from female students regarding the lecturer’s alleged inappropriate conduct and sexual advances.
“It seems they finally decided to catch him in the act,” one student, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told NaijaChoice News.
“People have been talking about his behaviour for a while, and this time, there was no escape.”
Despite the widespread claims on social media that the man is a Reverend Father, NaijaChoice News could not independently verify his clerical status at the time of this report.
While the university is a Catholic-affiliated institution and many of its staff are members of the clergy, the footage currently trending does not explicitly identify the man by name or provide documentation of his priesthood, although the students at the scene can be heard screaming labels associated with the clergy.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of Tansian University and the Catholic Church authorities have maintained a stony silence. No official statement has been issued to confirm the identity of the man, the status of the female student involved, or the disciplinary actions—if any—being taken against those who took the law into their own hands.
The incident has triggered a firestorm of reactions on social media, with Nigerians divided over the morality of the act versus the legality of the mob action.
A social media user, @TheUnitedLegon, slammed the suspect, stating: “Why did you become a priest if you can’t keep the vow?? Watin do pastor?? Why not just be a pastor get ur self a wife and have kids as many as you want and not live a life of lies.”
However, others condemned the students for resorting to violence. @chuks1994 wrote: “They’d never kick polithiefcians like that. Coz he’s a clergy, they dare lay their hands on him. Was he raping the student? I actually hate what this country has become. Young fools.”
Another user, @snnade, played down the criminal nature of the act: “There’s no crime here now! Just a sin before God who’s more than willing to forgive! We’re so dumb in this country sha!”
The Anambra State Police Command is yet to comment on whether any arrests have been made following the mob assault or if a formal complaint has been lodged by the university.
