Lagos, Nigeria – In a bold move amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has reaffirmed his government’s decision not to participate in the initial US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran, emphasizing the need for diplomatic negotiations to resolve the crisis. Speaking at a press conference in Downing Street, Starmer declared that the United Kingdom possesses “the strength to stand by our values and our principles no matter the pressure to do otherwise.”

The announcement comes as the UK ramps up its military presence in the region, with Starmer confirming the deployment of four additional Typhoon fighter jets to Qatar. This development follows Iran’s retaliatory attacks on Israel and several US-allied Gulf states, including Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, in response to the weekend’s strikes.

As previously reported by NaijaChoice News, the conflict erupted over the weekend when US and Israeli forces launched airstrikes on Iranian targets, prompting widespread condemnation and fears of a broader regional war. The UK’s initial refusal to allow the use of its bases for offensive operations drew sharp criticism from US President Donald Trump, who labeled the decision “shocking” and quipped that Starmer is “not Winston Churchill.” Trump further lamented that the UK-US relationship is “not what it was.”

However, Starmer pushed back against these claims, insisting that the longstanding “special relationship” between the two nations remains intact. “Look, the special relationship is in operation right now,” he told reporters. “We’re sharing intelligence on a 24/7 basis in the usual way. That is the special relationship.”

The Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s preference for a “negotiated settlement with Iran where they give up their nuclear ambitions,” urging all parties to focus on de-escalation efforts. He acknowledged the potential for the conflict to drag on “for some time” but assured the public that Britain is committed to protecting its citizens and interests. “We will do everything we can to protect British lives,” Starmer said, addressing concerns from families worried about loved ones caught in the crossfire.

In a show of preparedness, Starmer highlighted that the UK had begun pre-deploying assets to the region earlier this year, particularly in Qatar and Cyprus, in coordination with the US and other allies. Defence sources revealed that 400 additional UK personnel have been dispatched in recent weeks to bolster air defence operations at British bases in Cyprus. This comes after British facilities in Bahrain and Cyprus faced attacks over the weekend, including a drone strike on RAF Akrotiri that caused minimal damage.

“A lot of pre-planning has gone into this and a lot of pre-deployment,” Starmer explained. “I am satisfied we can keep our people safe.” Alongside the Typhoon jets, which are set for rapid deployment, two Wildcat helicopters equipped with anti-drone capabilities will arrive in Cyprus on Friday. Additionally, the British warship HMS Dragon is en route to Cyprus, expected to dock within the next couple of weeks, according to Defence Secretary John Healey.

Healey, who met with his Cypriot counterpart Vasilis Palmas on Thursday to discuss enhanced air defences, declined to rule out future UK involvement in offensive strikes. “We’re doing now what the British can do best. We’ve got more jets here in Cyprus than any other nation,” he told the BBC. However, he cautioned that “the nature of any war, and any conflict, is that it changes,” adding that the UK would adapt its strategies to safeguard its forces, allies, and citizens. Healey also noted that the drone attack on Akrotiri was “probably fired from Lebanon.”

Opposition voices have been critical of the government’s approach. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch argued on BBC Radio 4 that “sometimes the best way to de-escalate a situation is to try and finish it quickly, rather than let it drag out because you don’t want to get involved.” She contended that once British bases were targeted, the UK became inevitably entangled in the conflict.

The crisis has also sparked concerns among British expatriates in the region. Lorraine, a Briton who has resided in Cyprus for 35 years, expressed frustration to the BBC, saying, “We feel more supported from the other European countries than we do from our own.” She commended Greece and France for their swift assistance and urged the UK government to “step up.”

In response to the heightened risks, the UK has updated its travel advice for Cyprus, warning that a terrorist attack cannot be ruled out. Meanwhile, efforts to evacuate stranded Britons are underway. Starmer announced that the first government-chartered flight from Oman has finally taken off after a delay due to technical issues. Approximately 4,000 Britons have already returned home, with thousands more still in the Middle East. Over 140,000 individuals in the region have registered with the UK government.

Additional repatriation flights are scheduled, including seven from the UAE on Thursday, and British Airways has committed to daily services from Oman. The government plans to arrange more charter flights in the coming days to expedite the airlift.

For Nigerians and other Africans in the affected areas, the escalating conflict raises alarms about potential disruptions to trade, remittances, and safety.
