The Katsina State chapter of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) has directed all its members across the 34 local government areas to obtain membership cards of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Party Secretary Tijjani Kafinsoli disclosed the decision in an interview with journalists in Katsina on Wednesday, describing it as a collective move ordered by the national headquarters.
Kafinsoli said the state Chairman, Armaya’u Abdulkadir, announced the directive after receiving clear instructions from the party’s national leadership. He stressed that the entire structure is moving together, not in fragments.
“All party officials, from the ward up to the state levels, should hold on and not individually join the ADC, because the entire party will move into the party collectively,” Kafinsoli stated.
He added that executive members and other office holders should remain in their current positions unless they choose to resign for personal political reasons. However, ordinary card-carrying members without positions have been told to quickly register with the ADC and attach the new card to their voter’s card.
The development follows the recent defection of NNPP national leader and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who formally joined the ADC in Kano last week. Kwankwaso’s move has triggered similar realignments within his strong support base in the North-West.
Kafinsoli explained that discussions are still ongoing between the NNPP and ADC to create a single, unified structure before the 2027 general elections. NaijaChoice News understands the step is part of a wider opposition effort to build a formidable challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North.
Political analysts say the directive could significantly boost the ADC’s grassroots presence in Katsina, a state long considered strategic for northern politics. The move also reflects the growing momentum of opposition coalitions as parties position themselves early for the next presidential and governorship races.
No immediate reaction has come from the ruling APC in Katsina, but party watchers expect the realignment to reshape the political landscape in the North-West ahead of the polls.
