Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced that her government will not automatically renew its defence cooperation agreement with Israel.
She made the declaration on Tuesday in Verona while attending a wine industry event. “In light of the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence agreement with Israel,” Meloni told reporters.
NaijaChoice News reports that the pact, which covers military equipment exchange and joint technology research, was first signed in the mid-2000s and renewed every five years. It lapsed on Monday without extension.
A defence ministry source confirmed that military training cooperation between the two countries will stop immediately. The decision was reached after consultations with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini.
The move comes as Italy’s once-close ties with Israel have come under strain. Meloni’s government has repeatedly criticised Israeli military operations in Lebanon, including an incident last week where Israeli forces fired warning shots near Italian troops serving with a UN peacekeeping mission.
Observers say the suspension reflects broader European discomfort with the widening Middle East conflict, which now includes direct confrontations involving Iran. Israel has so far downplayed the Italian decision, insisting it will not affect its core security needs.
For Nigeria, the development highlights shifting global alliances at a time when Middle East instability continues to influence international oil markets. As Africa’s largest oil producer, any prolonged tension in the region could affect crude prices and foreign exchange earnings.
Diplomatic circles in Abuja are watching closely. Nigeria maintains strong bilateral relations with both Italy and Israel, particularly in agriculture, security technology and trade.
The Italian announcement is seen by analysts as a cautious recalibration rather than a full break in ties. It adds to growing calls in Europe for de-escalation and renewed peace talks in the Middle East.
