Ghana Sacks Black Stars Coach, Otto Addo After Back-To-Back Defeats

The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, throwing the four-time African champions into fresh uncertainty barely three months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off.

The decision came in a statement released in the early hours of Tuesday, just hours after Ghana suffered a 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart. It followed a 5-1 thrashing by Austria last Friday, extending a poor run of results in warm-up games.

“The decision takes immediate effect,” the GFA said, adding that a new technical direction for the national team would be announced in due course.

Addo had been in charge for two years and 16 days, guiding the Black Stars to qualification for the 2026 World Cup with a solid campaign in Group I. Yet his overall record stood at eight wins, five draws and nine losses, raising questions about consistency in big moments.

NaijaChoice News reports that the sacking has sparked intense debate across West Africa, where football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria remains fierce. Many Nigerian fans have taken to social media to troll their Ghanaian counterparts, with some drawing parallels to the Super Eagles’ own qualification struggles and coaching changes in recent years.

Super Eagles legend Victor Ikpeba, however, offered a more measured response. He reminded Ghanaians of Nigeria’s turbulent build-up to the 1998 World Cup, urging them not to panic as the tournament draws near.

The timing has raised eyebrows even among neutral observers. Ghana qualified comfortably as group winners but now face the 2026 finals without their coach who led them there, just 73 days before their opening match.

Football stakeholders in Nigeria say the move reflects the high stakes African nations face ahead of the expanded 48-team World Cup. With the Super Eagles also preparing for the global showpiece, many local analysts are watching closely to see who the GFA appoints next and how quickly the Black Stars can stabilise.
