Funso Doherty, the 2023 governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos, has formally obtained the expression of interest form of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 governorship election. The move signals his defection from the ADC and deepens the realignment of opposition forces ahead of a contest widely expected to challenge the long-standing dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Doherty announced the development last week, describing it as “one form, one mission, one movement” and reaffirming his commitment to “right principles, right path, right process” for Lagos. The former investment banker and pension industry executive had only weeks earlier resigned his membership of the ADC amid reported leadership disputes and concerns over internal cohesion.

Born in Lagos in 1968, Doherty brings a background in finance and corporate governance to the race. He previously served as Managing Director/CEO of PAL Pensions, overseeing assets worth over half a trillion naira. In the 2023 election, he polled fourth as the ADC candidate, behind the APC’s Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the PDP’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and other contenders. His persistent engagement in public discourse on governance, economic management, and public service delivery has kept him visible in Lagos political circles.

The NDC, founded in February 2026 following a split from the ADC, positions itself as a movement emphasising disciplined governance, institutional accountability, and long-term policy planning. Led by Sen. Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe as National Chairman (by court order), the party has attracted professionals and politicians seeking alternatives to the established parties. Doherty’s entry adds a credible Lagos-based figure with prior electoral experience and private sector credentials to the young platform.

Lagos remains Nigeria’s economic powerhouse, contributing a significant share of national GDP while grappling with infrastructure deficits, population pressures, transportation challenges, and rising living costs. The 2027 contest is already shaping up as a battle for the soul of the state, with questions around inclusive development, revenue management, and service delivery dominating public conversation. Doherty’s move comes at a time of fluid opposition politics, including reported conversations with figures like Peter Obi, as various actors explore platforms capable of mounting a serious challenge to the APC.

His acquisition of the form underscores the growing appeal of newer parties among politicians disillusioned with established structures. It also highlights the strategic calculations ahead of 2027, as aspirants position themselves on platforms perceived to offer better organisational coherence and ideological clarity. In Lagos, where voter turnout and mobilisation often determine outcomes, the ability of opposition parties to build broad coalitions will be critical.
