ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Government has announced the introduction of a new “green tax” surcharge on vehicles with engine capacities of 2,000cc and above, set to take effect from July 1, 2026.

According to the 2026 fiscal policy measures, the levy will range between 2 and 4 percent on high-emission vehicles. The aim is to discourage the use of large-engine cars that contribute heavily to air pollution and promote a shift towards cleaner energy options.

Smaller vehicles with engines below 2,000cc, mass transit buses, and fully electric vehicles will be completely exempted from the surcharge.

The policy forms part of broader efforts to address environmental challenges while aligning with Nigeria’s commitments to sustainable development. In a country where vehicular emissions remain a major contributor to urban air quality issues, especially in cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, the green tax is expected to influence vehicle acquisition patterns.

Officials believe the measure will encourage motorists to opt for more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives over time.

NaijaChoice News understands that the green tax is one of several fiscal adjustments designed to support Nigeria’s energy transition agenda. With increasing global pressure on nations to reduce carbon footprints, the policy positions the country to gradually move away from heavy dependence on fossil fuel-powered transport.

Transport operators and vehicle dealers have been urged to prepare for the changes, as the new levy could affect pricing and demand for certain categories of imported and locally assembled vehicles.

The exemption for mass transit and electric vehicles is seen as a deliberate incentive to boost public transportation and accelerate the adoption of cleaner technologies in Nigeria’s automotive sector.

Industry stakeholders will be closely monitoring the implementation to assess its impact on both the environment and the economy.

This development underscores Nigeria’s determination to integrate environmental considerations into its fiscal framework as the nation grapples with the twin challenges of climate change and sustainable growth.

The green tax represents a significant step in reshaping the country’s transport landscape for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
