Abuja, Nigeria —  The Federal Government has approved a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme to boost home ownership among civil servants, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, announced on Friday.

Walson-Jack made the disclosure during a press briefing in Abuja, stating that the facility would be implemented through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board.

According to her, the scheme seeks to promote stability and higher productivity within the civil service by helping workers secure their own homes.

Walson-Jack stressed that owning a home changes how civil servants approach their duties, bringing greater focus and confidence to their work.

“A person who owns their own home stands differently. When a civil servant knows their family has a place they can call their own, they come to work with more stability, more focus and more purpose,” she said.

She described the initiative as more than a welfare measure, positioning it as a core part of the administration’s governing approach that links worker support to national development.

“What you are witnessing is not simply a welfare package; it is a philosophy. A well-supported civil servant is a more effective civil servant, and a more effective civil service delivers a stronger Nigeria,” Walson-Jack added.

The Head of Service also spoke on broader reforms aimed at transforming the public service into a digital, paperless, efficient and transparent system.

As Head of the Civil Service, she reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring civil servants earn better, grow professionally, and receive the necessary tools and support to perform optimally.

Walson-Jack credited the progress to strong inter-agency collaboration involving the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Budget Office, and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, among others.

She urged all ministries, departments and agencies to sustain this collaborative spirit in service delivery and policy implementation for the benefit of Nigerians.

With Workers’ Day approaching on May 1, Walson-Jack said this year’s celebration holds special meaning as civil servants now have tangible proof of recognition from the highest levels of government.

She praised Nigerian civil servants for their dedication and resilience in the face of challenges, describing the current period as one of reward and renewed purpose.

NaijaChoice News reports that the housing loan scheme represents a significant step towards addressing long-standing welfare concerns in the Nigerian civil service.

The initiative underscores the link between improved worker welfare and enhanced public service delivery in Nigeria’s drive for national development.
