Lagos – A powerful explosion ripped through Valero Energy’s Port Arthur refinery in Texas on Monday, March 23, sending thick black smoke high into the sky and forcing nearby residents to shelter indoors.

The blast hit a diesel hydrotreater unit at the facility, one of America’s largest with a capacity of around 380,000 to 435,000 barrels per day. Emergency teams moved in quickly, and the fire was brought under control within hours. Authorities lifted the shelter-in-place order early Tuesday after confirming no injuries among workers or locals.

Port Arthur Mayor Charlotte M. Moses reassured residents that everyone remained safe despite the dramatic scenes. “There’s been an explosion, yes, but we’re OK; everybody’s OK,” she said. Officials noted the blast, possibly linked to an industrial heater malfunction, shook homes miles away and triggered road closures that have since reopened.

Valero confirmed all personnel were accounted for and the refinery faced a full shutdown pending investigation. Sources close to operations told Reuters the incident affected a key diesel processing unit, raising fresh concerns about short-term supply disruptions in the US Gulf Coast region.

The timing adds pressure to already volatile global oil markets. Crude prices have climbed sharply due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving Iran, pushing Brent above $100 per barrel in recent sessions. Traders reacted swiftly, with gasoline and diesel futures jumping in early trading following news of the Texas incident.

For Nigeria, the development hits close to home. As a major crude exporter heavily tied to international benchmarks, the country feels every ripple in global supply fears. Petrol prices at pumps have surged in recent weeks, with reports of averages climbing toward N1,300–N1,400 per litre in some areas amid the Iran-related uncertainty and earlier adjustments by major refiners like Dangote.

Market watchers say the Port Arthur outage, even if temporary, could amplify upward pressure on imported refined products that still influence local pricing. Nigerian motorists and businesses already grapple with high transport costs that feed into food inflation and daily living expenses.

Investigators continue to probe the exact cause at the Valero site. Valero described the event as contained, with no immediate environmental threats reported beyond the initial smoke plume.
