Brothers Nabbed for Killing Elder Sibling, Hiding Body for 16 Years

In a horrifying turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the serene community of Umuokoro in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, two brothers, Lucky Amadi and Uzoma Amadi, have been apprehended by the Imo State Police Command for the alleged murder of their elder brother, Orindu Amadi. The gruesome act, which reportedly took place around 2010 amid a fierce family dispute, remained shrouded in secrecy for over a decade until its dramatic unveiling last week.

According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, the brothers are accused of slaying Orindu during a heated argument, possibly linked to lingering grudges over their father’s mysterious death some years prior. Instead of coming clean, they allegedly buried his body in a shallow grave within an uncompleted building in their family compound, covering it with trash and plastic bottles to evade detection. For 16 long years, they spun a web of lies, claiming to relatives, neighbors, and the community that Orindu had emigrated abroad in search of greener pastures and simply lost touch.

The macabre secret came to light on February 10, 2026, when another sibling, who had been away from home for over a decade, returned unannounced. Driven by longstanding suspicions about Orindu’s sudden “disappearance,” he headed straight to the suspected site in the abandoned structure. What followed was a scene straight out of a nightmare: the digging unearthed skeletal remains, later confirmed through preliminary forensic analysis to be those of Orindu Amadi, a man in his late 30s at the time of his demise.

Alerted immediately, operatives from the Mbieri Divisional Headquarters swiftly responded, conducting an supervised exhumation. The suspects were detained on the spot, narrowly escaping a mob lynching by enraged youths from Umuchimanyiri village in Obazu Mbieri. Eyewitnesses recounted how the brothers confessed under duress, admitting the killing was in retaliation for Orindu’s alleged role in their father’s death about 10 years ago under questionable circumstances. “They said he caused our father’s death, that’s why we did it,” one source quoted the suspects as saying.

Imo State Police Spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrests in a statement: “We have two suspects in custody following the discovery of human remains in a family compound in Mbaitoli LGA. Investigations are ongoing to unravel the full details of this heinous crime. We urge the public to remain calm and allow justice to prevail.” This echoes earlier comments from police sources, highlighting the brothers’ tricycle operator background and the community’s stunned reaction.

Neighbors and community members are still reeling from the revelation. Mama Nkechi, a long-time resident, lamented: “Orindu was a hardworking soul; we all believed he was hustling in Europe. To think this evil was right here among us—chai, the heart of man is wicked!” Another villager, speaking anonymously, added, “The Amadi family was respected; now, this has brought shame upon us all.”

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, similar cases of familial betrayals have plagued Nigerian communities, underscoring the need for vigilance and timely intervention in disputes. Authorities are appealing for anyone with further information to step forward as the investigation deepens at the state headquarters in Owerri.

This tragic saga serves as a stark reminder of the hidden darkness that can fester within families, turning blood ties into bonds of betrayal. As the wheels of justice grind on, the people of Umuokoro pray for closure and peace.
