Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has terminated negotiations with the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress over a possible defection to the ruling party.
The Peoples Democratic Party chairman in Bauchi State, Pharm. Sama’ila Adamu Burga, broke the news at a press conference in Bauchi on Saturday. He said the talks started after the APC invited the governor and other major stakeholders, including lawmakers, House of Assembly members and local government chairmen, to cross over ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Burga described the move as an attempt at dialogue and political inclusiveness. Both sides had signalled readiness to explore options in good faith at the initial stage.
After careful and extensive considerations, however, the proposals from the discussions were rejected by the APC leadership. Burga told reporters the failure to agree brought the entire process to an abrupt end.
NaijaChoice News reports that attention has now turned to Governor Mohammed’s next line of action. The collapse of the talks has opened fresh possibilities, including new alliances or a review of his current political position.
Political observers in the North-East believe the development will reshape strategies within the PDP in Bauchi. The state remains a key battleground ahead of next year’s polls.
It would be recalled that three weeks ago, APC national chairman Prof. Nentawe Yiltwada and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf visited Governor Mohammed in Bauchi to woo him into the party. The high-profile meeting had raised expectations of a major political realignment.
With the negotiations now off the table, stakeholders are watching closely to see how the governor will reposition himself and his loyalists in the unfolding political season.
