Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats, has predicted that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will win the African Democratic Congress presidential ticket if he contests the primaries.
Ardo made the declaration on Friday during a live appearance on AIT’s Focus Nigeria programme. He argued that even if the party opts for direct or delegate primaries, Atiku’s support base and experience would carry the day every time.
The elder statesman stressed that a consensus arrangement in the ADC looks unlikely. According to him, it would require major contenders like Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and others to step aside for one person.
“Three or so would have to step down for one,” Ardo said. He noted that while Obi might personally agree to step down, his Obidient Movement would strongly oppose it. Atiku’s own supporters, he added, may allow him to step aside but the former vice president himself is not inclined to do so.
Ardo was categorical: if all aspirants go into a proper primary, Atiku would emerge winner “100 percent” even if the exercise is repeated 100 times.
NaijaChoice News reports that Ardo’s comments come as opposition leaders intensify efforts to build a formidable front against the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Atiku Abubakar has already formalised his membership of the ADC, while Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and other heavyweights continue to feature prominently in coalition talks.
Political observers note that the ADC has become the preferred platform for several former PDP, Labour Party and APC elements seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. Recent joint press conferences and strategic meetings involving Atiku, Obi, Amaechi and former Senate President David Mark underscore the growing momentum.
Ardo’s position reflects strong northern sentiment within the emerging alliance. As a key convener of the League of Northern Democrats, he has consistently pushed for a united opposition that can deliver results in 2027.
Whether the ADC eventually settles for consensus or goes the full primary route remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Atiku Abubakar’s entry has added fresh dynamics to the race for the party’s presidential ticket.
Analysts say the coming weeks will determine if the opposition can overcome internal rivalries and present a single strong candidate capable of unseating the APC in 2027.
