EFFURUN, Delta State — The Delta State Police Command has arrested Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and transferred him to Force Headquarters in Abuja over the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun and was captured in a video that quickly went viral on social media, sparking public outrage across the state.
According to the Command’s Spokesperson, Bright Edafe, Ogidi was first apprehended by members of the public for allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition. Police operatives from the Area Command Effurun were then called to the scene to take custody of the suspect.
Edafe stated that ASP Usman, who led the team, discharged his firearm in violation of Force Order 237 and the Nigeria Police Force Standard Operating Procedure, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, immediately ordered the officer’s arrest and directed his transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba for preliminary investigation. Usman has since been queried and moved to Abuja, where he will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for sanction and possible prosecution.
CP Oyeniyi condemned the act as a breach of police operational guidelines and reiterated the Command’s commitment to professionalism, human rights, and accountability. He also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.
NaijaChoice News understands that the Command maintains zero tolerance for any form of lawlessness or extra-judicial conduct by its personnel.
This swift action by the Delta Police Command underscores the growing demand for accountability within Nigeria’s security agencies, especially in a region where public trust in law enforcement remains critical to peace and order.
