- Out Of 106 Senators, The APC Now Has 87 Senators – Akpabio
Abuja, Nigeria – Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) now controls about 87 seats in the 106-member Senate, giving the ruling party a commanding majority in the 10th National Assembly.
Akpabio made the revelation while addressing APC stakeholders, boasting that only a handful of senators are still outside the fold. He disclosed that about twenty-something senators are currently in negotiations with the party leadership.
“Remain few people to join us, but about twenty-something are still negotiating with me. When the negotiations are completed, I will let you know so we can move as one,” Akpabio said.
The development comes as the APC continues to strengthen its grip on the Red Chamber following several defections and strategic alignments since the 2023 elections. With 87 senators, the party is now well above the two-thirds threshold needed for major decisions.
Political observers say the swelling numbers could smoothen legislative processes for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, especially on key bills and budget matters. However, it has also raised concerns about the shrinking opposition in the Senate.
NaijaChoice News understands that the remaining senators still negotiating are mostly from opposition parties, with some PDP and other minority members reportedly eyeing the ruling party for better political alignment ahead of 2027.
Akpabio, who has consistently pushed for unity within the APC caucus, urged patience as talks continue. He assured that once concluded, the party would operate as a solid bloc.
The Senate President’s comments have sparked fresh debates on the future of multi-party democracy in the National Assembly, with critics warning that such dominance could weaken checks and balances.
