Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has vowed to mobilise everything within her power against Peter Obi if the former Anambra governor wins the presidency and attempts to serve beyond a single four-year term.
Yesufu made the declaration during a live interview on Arise Television on Monday. She insisted Obi must stick to the one-term pledge he has repeatedly made to Nigerians and to her personally.
“If Mr Peter Obi gets into office and decides to do more than one term, I, Aisha Yesufu, said it here, I will oppose him with everything in me because he gave his word,” she stated.
The activist reminded viewers that Obi’s position on a single term did not begin after the 2023 election but long before it. She said she had sat down with him after the polls to extract a fresh confirmation.
“I sat down with Mr Peter Obi and I said to him, I need your word on this… Is it true? You’re going to do just one term,” Yesufu recalled. Obi, she added, looked her in the eye and reaffirmed the promise without hesitation.
According to her, Obi told her: “Aisha, I told you even in 2023, and I still mean it… I don’t joke with my name. I don’t joke with my integrity.”
Yesufu warned that any attempt by Obi to renege would meet stiff resistance from her and others who took him at his word. “He said he gave his word. He can’t come back and say that he’s going to do more than one term. We will fight him there,” she declared.
The activist, however, expressed strong confidence that Obi would keep his promise. She described him as “a man who keeps his word” and compared his approach to leadership with that of global icons like Nelson Mandela, who prioritised legacy over prolonged stay in power.
As political conversations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, Yesufu’s position underscores growing public demand for politicians to honour voluntary commitments. Obi has consistently argued that a single term would free any president from re-election pressures and allow full focus on fixing Nigeria’s security, economy and infrastructure challenges.
NaijaChoice News notes that the activist’s stance comes as Obi continues to feature prominently in opposition discussions, with many supporters already banking on his integrity to deliver on the one-term vow he first publicly articulated years ago.
