MINNA, Niger State — The newly elected Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Niger State has issued a strong warning over the party’s fate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He declared that any move by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove the ADC from the ballot could trigger a major crisis that might derail the polls entirely.
The chairman spoke shortly after his emergence as leader of the party in the state, amid ongoing national leadership disputes rocking the ADC.
According to him, the ADC has positioned itself as a credible opposition platform capable of challenging the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger and beyond.
Niger State, a key North-Central stronghold with significant political influence, has long been dominated by the APC, which recently swept all local government chairmanship seats in the state.
Political observers note that a vibrant multi-party contest remains essential for deepening Nigeria’s democracy, especially as citizens demand alternatives amid economic hardships.
The chairman’s comment comes as reports of tensions between INEC and some opposition parties continue to circulate, with concerns over recognition of leadership structures.
NaijaChoice News understands that internal party congresses and leadership ratification processes are ongoing across several states, including efforts to resolve disputes within the ADC.
Stakeholders in Niger have urged all parties to prioritise due process and the rule of law to avoid any vacuum that could affect preparations for 2027.
The chairman emphasised the need for INEC to act fairly to guarantee credible elections that reflect the will of Nigerians.
This development underscores the high stakes in Nigeria’s opposition politics as the countdown to 2027 begins, with many watching how leadership and regulatory issues will shape the electoral landscape.
“If INEC remove ADC (the opposition) from the ballot, there may be no election in 2027.”
