Abuja – The 118-kilometre reinforced concrete pavement section of the Abuja–Kaduna Highway has reached 95 per cent completion, fully equipped with solar street lighting.
NaijaChoice News reports that the phase, built to the same high standard as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, is valued at ₦252 billion. Over 80 per cent of the cost has already been covered under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The section is on course for full completion in the first week of May 2026. This progress marks a major step in the federal government’s drive to deliver durable infrastructure across the country.
Work is advancing steadily on the remaining 164-kilometre stretch in Kaduna State. That segment is also using reinforced concrete pavement and is valued at ₦502 billion, with 70 per cent of the funding already released.
The entire Abuja–Kaduna road project is expected to be fully ready by December 2026. Once completed, the highway will feature comprehensive solar lighting along its entire length.
The project forms part of the larger Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano reconstruction flagged off by President Tinubu in 2025. Officials say the switch to concrete pavement will make the road last up to 100 years, cutting long-term maintenance costs and improving safety for users.
For years, the Abuja–Kaduna route has been a lifeline for the North, linking the capital to major commercial hubs in Kaduna and beyond. Commuters and traders in the Arewa region have endured poor surfaces, frequent breakdowns and security challenges on the old alignment.
The new highway is expected to ease travel time, reduce accidents and open fresh opportunities for farmers and businesses. Better connectivity will support agriculture, trade and movement of goods across northern states.
Federal officials have described the milestone as a clear sign of renewed commitment to fixing Nigeria’s road network. With solar lighting now in place on the completed section, night travel is set to become safer and more reliable.
