Iran has proposed a new deal to the United States offering to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war if America lifts its naval blockade on the waterway, NaijaChoice News reports.
The proposal, first reported by Axios and confirmed by multiple international outlets including Reuters and Bloomberg, was conveyed to Washington through Pakistani mediators. It also seeks to postpone nuclear negotiations to a later stage while prioritising the immediate reopening of the strait and cessation of hostilities.
The development comes more than two months after the war erupted on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran. Iran responded by imposing a de-facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint that normally carries about 20 per cent of global oil supply and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas. In retaliation, the US enforced a blockade targeting Iranian ports and oil exports.
The resulting disruption severely crippled global oil flows, pushed crude prices sharply higher, and forced many governments to adopt emergency energy conservation measures. For Nigeria, the situation presented a mixed bag: higher international crude prices offered potential revenue windfalls for Africa’s largest oil producer, though reduced domestic output limited the full benefit while contributing to rising pump prices at home.
According to sources cited in the Axios report, the Iranian offer aims to break the current stalemate in diplomatic talks. It suggests extending the fragile ceasefire into a more permanent arrangement focused first on the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran’s nuclear programme to be addressed subsequently.
However, it remains unclear whether President Donald Trump will accept the terms. Ending Iran’s uranium enrichment activities remains a core US objective in the conflict. Trump has repeatedly stated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain “sealed up tight” until a satisfactory deal is reached, viewing American control of the waterway as key leverage.
NaijaChoice News understands that Trump convened a situation room meeting on Monday with his top national security and foreign policy advisers to review the stalemate and evaluate next steps, including Iran’s latest proposal.
The Strait of Hormuz has been hotly contested since the outbreak of hostilities. Iran’s closure of the passage drastically reduced oil shipments, while the US blockade sought to starve Tehran of vital revenue by blocking its oil sales and creating storage challenges for its crude production.
Diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis have so far yielded little progress. Analysts note that any lasting agreement must balance immediate economic relief from reopened shipping lanes with long-term security concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
As global energy markets continue to monitor developments closely, the outcome of this proposal could have significant implications for oil prices and economic stability worldwide. For Nigeria and other oil-exporting nations in Africa, a successful reopening of the strait may stabilise prices, while failure to reach agreement could prolong the current volatility and its ripple effects on fuel costs and living expenses.
