The Obidient Movement has strongly reaffirmed that Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections and now a leading aspirant on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform, will honour his pledge to serve only one four-year term if elected President in 2027.

Obi, who formally registered as an ADC member in Anambra State earlier this year and has been at the centre of opposition realignments, has consistently described the single-term decision as non-negotiable. He insists it is designed to deliver focused, accountable governance and strengthen national unity through power rotation.

Despite growing support within the ADC coalition, some Nigerians remain doubtful, pointing out that no president in the country’s history has willingly stepped down after just one term.

National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr Yunusa Tanko, who spoke in a widely reported interview, described Obi as a leader whose word is his bond. “We believe Peter Obi is the right person to lead Nigeria at this point in time. He is a very sincere and rare breed politician whose word is his bond. He did not only promise Obidients, but he said it to the whole world that if elected, he will serve only one term,” Tanko stated.

Tanko emphasised that the pledge goes beyond personal ambition. “For us in the Obidient Movement, that is one of the virtues of a credible and trustworthy leader. Once he tells you something, you can rest assured that he will not go back on his word.”

The movement’s position ties directly into Nigeria’s long-standing power rotation principle. Tanko noted that after the North’s eight years under former President Muhammadu Buhari, the South deserves to complete its own cycle. “We recognise that the 2027 election is for the southern presidency for the remaining four years. The northern region had eight years with the Buhari presidency, and the incumbent has almost completed four years. Obi believes strongly in the unity of this country, which is why he pledged to serve only one term,” he explained.

According to Tanko, Obi is convinced that a single term is enough for any serious leader to tackle systemic challenges. “He believes four years is enough for any serious leader to make appreciable impact and correct many of the decays in the system. Nigerians should rest assured that he will remain true to his words. He will serve one term, and Nigerians will not regret voting for him,” Tanko added.

NaijaChoice News understands that this renewed assurance comes as political horse-trading intensifies ahead of the 2027 polls. Obi has emerged as a major contender within the ADC, with the Obidient Movement mobilising support across the country while rejecting any notion of him playing a supporting role to another aspirant. The single-term promise is also seen as a strategic olive branch to northern voters, many of whom have expressed concern over zoning arrangements following President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing tenure in the South.

Political observers say Obi’s stance, first publicly articulated during his 2023 campaign and later reinforced in coalition talks, could reshape opposition strategy. With the ADC now positioning itself as a formidable alternative, the former Anambra governor’s insistence on one term is being projected as a fresh departure from the usual four-plus-four tenure culture that has defined Nigerian politics.

As the countdown to 2027 gathers momentum, the Obidient Movement insists that Peter Obi’s promise is not just political rhetoric but a deliberate sacrifice for Nigeria’s stability and progress. Whether voters will buy into this vision remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the debate over leadership, trust and power rotation has just been reignited.
