Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat in Hungary’s parliamentary election, bringing an end to his 16-year rule.
Péter Magyar, the 45-year-old leader of the centre-right Tisza party and a former insider who became Orbán’s sharpest critic, is now set to take over as prime minister. With more than 80 per cent of votes counted, his party is heading for a commanding majority that could give it the two-thirds supermajority needed to rewrite the political script in Budapest.
NaijaChoice News reports that record numbers of Hungarians turned out to vote in what was widely seen as a make-or-break poll for the country and the future of Europe. Early results show Tisza winning around 138 seats in the 199-member parliament, while Orbán’s Fidesz party is left with just 55.
Magyar, a lawyer who only entered frontline politics in 2024, campaigned on a clear platform of closer European Union ties, stamping out corruption and unlocking frozen EU funds. He has promised to reverse many of the constitutional changes introduced under Orbán.
The outcome marks a heavy blow to Orbán’s close allies on the world stage, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and United States President Donald Trump. Orbán himself described the result as “painful” but “clear” and personally telephoned Magyar to offer congratulations shortly after polls closed on Sunday.
Political watchers in Nigeria have taken keen interest in the vote. Many see it as fresh proof that even long-entrenched leaders can be swept aside when voters decide enough is enough.
For Hungary, the change signals a likely shift away from years of confrontation with Brussels and a more cooperative stance within the EU. This could have knock-on effects for trade, energy deals and migration policies that touch African countries.
Magyar has already told jubilant supporters along the banks of the Danube that “Hungarians said yes to Europe today.” As he prepares to form the next government, all eyes will be on how quickly he can turn those promises into action.
The Orbán era is officially over. A new chapter has begun in Budapest.
