President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that neither his administration nor the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is pushing Nigeria towards a one-party state.
The President made the assertion on Friday while addressing delegates at the party’s 8th national convention held at Eagle Square in Abuja.
Tinubu stressed that the APC would not tamper with the constitutional freedom of association. He said he remains committed to credible opposition parties that can hold the government accountable.
“Let me reiterate, especially to those who often lament and misunderstand us. We do not seek a one-party state,” he told the gathering.
“As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition—one that can challenge, question and help refine policies. That is how statecraft improves, and good governance is achieved. That is how nations advance,” Tinubu added.
NaijaChoice News reports that the remarks come amid growing concerns over the wave of defections from opposition parties into the APC in recent months. Critics had feared the developments could weaken multiparty democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The President however insisted democracy only grows stronger through vibrant and healthy competition.
The two-day convention drew 8,453 delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Party leaders used the platform to elect new national executives and reaffirm support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tinubu’s message is seen as a direct response to those who worry that APC’s current strength might stifle political pluralism. He urged party members to focus on delivering good governance rather than dominating the political space.
The convention ended on Saturday with renewed calls for unity within the APC as it prepares for future electoral battles.
