Kano Woman Delivers Quintuplets, Dies Hours After

A Kano woman, Hafsatu Yusuf, has died hours after giving birth to quintuplets at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

The Kano State Ministry of Health confirmed the incident. Public Relations Officer Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa told journalists that Yusuf passed away around 2am on Thursday, March 26, at the hospital following persistent postpartum bleeding. Medical teams worked tirelessly to stabilise her but could not control the haemorrhage.

NaijaChoice News gathered that Yusuf delivered three boys and two girls on Wednesday afternoon. Earlier scans had indicated triplets, but labour progressed to reveal quintuplets. The newborns remain in stable condition and are receiving intensive care at the same facility.

K/Na’isa disclosed that the deceased was buried on Thursday in accordance with Islamic rites at her Hotoro residence. Her husband, Salisu Nafiu, a commercial tricycle operator, is said to have broken down in tears upon receiving the news. This was Yusuf’s ninth pregnancy.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed the state government to fully take over the medical care and welfare of the quintuplets. The intervention forms part of ongoing efforts to support maternal and child health in Kano, where multiple births often stretch limited resources.

The ministry has appealed to the public and well-meaning Nigerians to support the babies with baby milk, diapers, clothing and other essentials. Officials stressed that the infants are doing well under close medical supervision.

Health experts note that postpartum complications like severe bleeding remain a major challenge in northern Nigeria, especially in cases of multiple deliveries.
