Awka, Anambra State – In a move that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The event took place on Saturday in his hometown of Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State, marking the end of months of speculation about his political future. This development comes amid preparations for the 2027 general elections and Obi’s vocal criticism of the recently enacted Electoral Act 2026.

The registration ceremony was part of a larger flag-off event for ADC’s statewide membership drive in Anambra, attended by prominent figures including Senator Victor Umeh, Senator Ben Obi, and other lawmakers from the National and State Assemblies. Obi, who completed his e-registration and received his membership card, urged supporters to mobilize and join the party, emphasizing that the 2027 polls will be a battle between the Nigerian people and bad governance.

As previously reported by NaijaChoice News on Obi’s growing dissatisfaction with the LP and hints of a potential defection, this step confirms his departure from the party that propelled him to national prominence in 2023. Sources close to the politician revealed that consultations with ADC leaders, including a meeting with National Chairman David Mark, solidified his decision. Obi has also declared his intention to legally challenge aspects of the Electoral Act 2026, which he claims hinders fair political participation.

During the Awka flag-off, Obi addressed a crowd of dignitaries, stating: “The forthcoming election in 2027 will not merely be a contest between political parties; it will be a defining choice between the Nigerian people and bad governance.” He encouraged widespread participation, adding that meaningful change begins with active involvement in the political process.

This defection has drawn reactions from across the spectrum. The All Progressives Congress (APC) described it as Obi entering a “coalition of chaos,” while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed satisfaction with the move. Political analysts suggest this could reshape opposition dynamics, especially in the South-East, where Obi enjoys massive support.

Obi’s journey to ADC follows a historic meeting on December 31, 2025, in Enugu, where Igbo leaders from various states converged to endorse the party as a platform for renewal. Attendees included figures like Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, highlighting a unified push for credible governance.

With this registration, Obi positions himself as a key player in ADC, potentially eyeing the party’s presidential ticket for 2027. As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, his message of a “New Nigeria that is POssible” continues to resonate with many.
