Lagos – Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, the 79-year-old wife of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died after succumbing to severe injuries sustained during the joint US-Israeli airstrikes that killed her husband and several family members last weekend.

Iranian state media, including Tasnim News Agency and Press TV, confirmed the sad development on Monday, describing her passing as “martyrdom.” Sources said Bagherzadeh had been rushed into a coma immediately after the Saturday strikes targeted the leadership residence in Tehran. She never recovered and breathed her last on March 2, 2026.

The couple, who tied the knot in 1964, shared a quiet life away from the spotlight despite Khamenei’s decades in power. They had six children – four sons (Mostafa, Mojtaba, Masoud and Meysam) and two daughters (Boshra and Hoda). Bagherzadeh remained largely private, focusing on family while her husband steered Iran through turbulent times.

Her death comes barely 48 hours after Iranian authorities confirmed the assassination of Khamenei himself in the same US-Israeli offensive. Reports also indicated that a daughter, grandson, son-in-law and one daughter-in-law were among those killed in the barrage. United States President Donald Trump had earlier announced the strikes, describing them as precision operations against key military and security targets.

The devastating turn of events has sent shockwaves across the Middle East and beyond. Iranian officials have vowed strong retaliation, while global leaders continue to monitor the rapidly escalating crisis that threatens to spiral into wider regional conflict.

For Nigeria, the development carries serious implications. As a major oil exporter, any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz or fresh spikes in global crude prices could hit the economy hard at a time when fuel subsidy removal pains are still fresh. Energy analysts in Abuja are already warning of possible increases at the pumps if the situation deteriorates further.

Muslim leaders and commentators in Nigeria have expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “This is not just an Iranian tragedy; it is a blow to the entire Ummah,” said a prominent Islamic scholar in Kano who spoke to NaijaChoice News on condition of anonymity. Many others called for restraint and dialogue to prevent more innocent lives from being lost.

As Tehran mourns yet another pillar of the revolution, questions are mounting about the future of Iran’s leadership and the stability of the entire region. The world watches with bated breath as fresh reports of unrest emerge from Iranian cities.
